    Music: Martin Gerigk
    Production/School: Martin Gerigk

‘Night Ride from LA’ is based on a real car ride at night from downtown LA to the desert near Palm Springs a few years ago. The footage was taken from the car by continually shooting single long exposure photos to document the ride of about two hours without any break. This technique condensed the whole trip to a flickering twirl of time-stretched movements and night light graffiti causing a kind of psychedelic trance. A love letter to the energy and vibe of the Californian way of life.

These algorithmic visions are made possible by the humans who are putting heroic efforts to build new AI infrastructures, promising to create essential services to live in this world. While machines are turning into wonderful storytellers, humans are slaying their way to produce new forms of machine creativity.

  18. Netherlands 2024
    Directed by: Robin Noorda
    Screenplay: Robin Noorda
    Production/School: Robin Noorda, Marc Thelosen
    Dialogue language: English

Lunatic tackles urgent earthly issues, as seen by a lonely astronaut, called Antonio, who was left behind on the moon after his coming out. In addition to the climate crisis, human waste, even in space, determines our fate. The moon-guard, a statue of a skinned warrior, symbolises defence against the space debris danger from above. Ultimately, collisions between space debris and satellites will cause a cascade of collisions that will destroy all communications. It's called Kessler syndrome. The earth ends up with a Saturn like dust ring of metal and silicon. Antonio is aware of these problems and as he put's it: “It is one small scrap by man, one giant heap by mankind.” He tries to do some terra forming on the moon and finally he meets the all knowing 'I am AI' who also happens to be the voice over. Lunatic is an improvisation animation film by Robin Noorda, based on his poem about the human behaviour of leaving waste everywhere.

  19. Spora 02:44
  20. United Kingdom 2023
Directed by: Lucy Hardcastle, Maisie Cousins
    Animation: Elena Charobay
Technique: 3D animation and photography - using Cinema4D and Houdini
    Music: Billy Brooks
    Production/School: Lucy Hardcastle Studio

Spora is a visceral exploration of hidden feminine alchemy, brought to life as a series of hypnotic moving images. Inspired by nature’s invisible and intelligent systems of continuous decay and spontaneous growth that are often overlooked, such as mycelium, mould and spores, these works aim to represent the unseen moments that are necessary for life; decomposition, transformation and renewal. The series creates a transformative moment, a chance to resonate with the bodily movement and sensations of the work. A moment of connection, as they crawl across their own skin. This self-initiated project is the first collaboration between longtime friends Lucy Hardcastle and Maisie Cousins. These award-winning female creatives’ practice intersects ideas of sensuality, tactility and human perception, through a range of visual mediums. “The combination of traditional photography and animated CGI elements has allowed us to create hyperreal hi-resolution mutations, providing a sense of unexpected enchantment.”

    Screenplay: Jason Zumpano
    Animation: Kerr Holden
Technique: 3D - a mx of hand and procedural computer animation
    Music: Jason Zumpano
    Production/School: JAZfilm

A meditation on the radically different means of creation available to us, Jason Zumpano’s latest short “Glide” is an invitation to the mythopoetic and the various materials, from the painterly to the digital, that bring it into existence. Against Matisse-like colour palettes and impressionistic-resolutions, the central figure of “Glide” is a woman floating on a lantern-helmed rowboat. We float through various angles and perspectives as she’s drawn languidly towards a collective future. The screen blends between settings that emerge from sky to ocean and from canvas to characters coming together in a watery dreamscape that enacts a mysterious ritual. The soundtrack voices the oceanic and star-lit setting. Think Vangelis in an Aeolian reverie of golden hues. Think, ponder and glide.

This film diary was shot on 8mm film from July 2018 to July 2023. In the beginning, I shot one frame of the sky seen from my front door every morning and night. Passenger planes passing through the new Haneda route for Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 began to cross that sky. I decorated the sink with flowers given to me by a graduating student and shot them every day as I moved closer and further away. The apartment visible from the balcony on the opposite side of the entrance was demolished and turned into a nursing home, and the parking lot that I saw every day from the front door was turned into a housing exhibition hall.

  36. Greece 2024
    Directed by: George Portokalis

Night light is a short film that originated from night time shots on the public transport, photographs and objects found on the streets and from footage of the sea.

The low tech and handmade quality of the footage is intentionally shot with a mobile phone. A combination of stop frame animation and double exposure video layering is used to create a rupture of time and place, night and day, sleep and wakefulness.
